Addiction To Numbness

Linda sat opposite me at one of my five-day Inner Bonding Intensives. She had decided to attend the Intensive because her depression, which had plagued her for years, was not being helped by medication or by the numerous forms of therapy that she had tried. As she sat opposite me, telling me about her past and her depression, I felt like I was sitting with a person who had stuffed herself into a box and closed the door. There was a sense of emptiness and numbness that emanated from her. “Linda,” I asked her. “When did you first feel this numbness that I feel coming from you?” Linda started to cry. “I was 9 years old when my uncle sexually …

A Good Leader Knows The Team’s Colours

Leadership can be a very challenging task. As leaders we don’t always get to choose who is on our team. In fact very often a leader inherits a team, of which most of the members have been there far longer than the leader, and may even know more about the work than the leader. Whatever the situation, one of the responsibilities of a leader is to motivate the team to all work together towards the common goal. This can be a daunting challenge. So often the team is comprised of very diverse members, each with their own strengths, weaknesses, and work styles. The team dynamics are also often complicated by internal disagreements and personal conflicts. The leader, not only has …

Email notice of intent to publish is appreciated but not required: mail to: brent@actionleadership.com Word count: 685 Leadership entails getting results, and getting results entails human relationships. The more closely the people and the leader bond, the more results will usually accrue. However, most leaders and the people they lead look at those relationships as a one way street: charismatic leaders being commonly defined by sentiments bestowed on them from the people. But great leadership is really a two-way street, also involving sentiments going from …

A New Conversation About Dreams – The Power of Intention

It’s time to change the way we think and speak about our dreams. Transforming a conversation, just like manifesting a dream, begins by setting an intention. Your intentions will assist you in taking greater control of your life. A working definition for intention is: “to have in mind a purpose or plan, to direct the mind, to aim”. Lacking intention, we sometimes stray without meaning or direction. But with it, all the forces of the universe can align to make even the most impossible, possible. My intention is to transform the conversation around dreams from fear and doubt, to hope and possibility, followed by action and results. Some might say this is not the right time to dream. The media …

A Look At Intrinsic Motivation

Intrinsic motivation is when an individual is motivated by internal factors, as opposed to external factors. Examples of intrinsic motivation would be doing something because you feel it is the moral and ethical thing to do; doing something because you know it will benefit others or doing something because it brings you pleasure and joy. The latter is common in regards to an enjoyable pastime or a hobby. It is believed that intrinsic motivation is far stronger than extrinsic motivation however there are times when extrinsic motivation can become stronger because it displaces intrinsic motivation. This is known as the overjustification effect. For example this occurs when you begin doing something for intrinsic reasons and then are offered monies or …

A Lesson In Gaslighting

There’s a psychological technique called gaslighting which is incredibly potent especially in persuasive situations. A few nights ago I was watching TV, just flipping around aimlessly, and came upon an old episode of M*A*S*H. In this episode, BJ is bored and to entertain himself he cooks up a plan for amusement at Winchester’s expense. BJ takes a pair of Winchester’s pants and in their place replaces them with a pair two sizes too large. When Winchester eventually puts the pants on, BJ asks if Winchester is okay. He mentions that he’s noticed him looking a little under the weather and suggests that he maybe has a virus because he’s looking too thin. Later, BJ replaces the pants that are too …

We all knew what “putting the screws to him” meant — using rewards and punishments …

A guide to dream interpretation

Most of us dream. But only a very small percentage of us understands that dreams hold much importance and opportunity for our self growth, improvement and self discovery. But many mystics of both Eastern and Western origins are aware of the fact that dreams hold a wealth of untapped knowledge. Because of its inherently vague nature, dreams and the art of interpreting them never entered mainstream sciences. Jungian psychology is the closest mainstream science that took dreams seriously. This article is a concise description of the method of dream interpretation that I use. There are several points/guidelines to take note. 1. The dreams are often symbolic representations of what we are experiencing or are about to experience in the near …

A Matter Of Moving – Spirituality Information

As many times as I’ve changed residences, moved from one state to another, even moved from country to country, I’ve been filled with a mixture of apprehension and excitement. For many of us, just moving from day to day, month to month or year to year creates a similar anxiety or a subtle excitement. It doesn’t matter whether we move in time or we move in space, there is one constant — change. It seems a contradiction to say that the only permanent thing we encounter in our daily lives is change, but change is what it’s all about. The process of growing from a child into a teenager and then into an adult is one that’s constantly filled with …

A brief history of dreams and their interpretation

The interpretation of dreams by dream experts may be almost as old as dreaming itself. We know that all humans, and many animals, dream every night, and humans have always been fascinated to learn what causes dreams and what they mean. The interpretation of dreams dates back at least as far as 3000-4000 B.C. We know that because the interpretations of dreams were recorded in permanent form on clay tablets. It is thought that many primitive peoples were unable to initially distinguish between the real world and the dream world. In many cases, these people looked upon the dream world as an extension of the physical world around them, and in many cases they saw the dream world as more …
